Ravens Release Safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson
The Baltimore Ravens are releasing safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson from their practice squad, creating another shift in the defensive landscape for the team.
The move comes as a mutual agreement between Gardner-Johnson’s agent, Kevin Conner, and the Ravens organization following Baltimore’s recent acquisition of safety Alohi Gilman. “After the Ravens traded for a safety, we were looking for a clearer path to play,” Conner stated. Gardner-Johnson initially started the first three games of the season with the Houston Texans before being released and subsequently signing with Baltimore, which was experiencing a need for safety depth at the time.
A fourth-round pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, Gardner-Johnson has amassed 51 passes defensed and 18 interceptions across 77 career games. He was a Super Bowl LVII champion with the Philadelphia Eagles last year, contributing to a successful defensive unit. His availability could be a boon for teams seeking secondary help as the season progresses; you can find more information about NFL player transactions at NFL.com.
Gardner-Johnson will now be seeking a new team, and the Ravens will continue to evaluate their safety options following the addition of Gilman. For a deeper dive into NFL safety rankings, see Pro-Football-Reference.
Team officials have indicated they will continue to monitor the free agent market for potential additions to the secondary.
