Recent Statistics Canada data reveals a notable shift in North American travel patterns, as fewer Canadians are traveling to the United States while visits to Canada from American tourists are on the rise. This marks the first time in recent history that inbound U.S.travel has surpassed outbound Canadian travel, a trend fueled by a combination of economic factors and ongoing political considerations [[1]]. The data underscores a broader move by Canadian travelers toward diversifying their destinations, with increased interest in overseas travel.

Canadian travel to the United States continued to decline in October, while visits to Canada from Americans increased for the first time in eight months, according to Statistics Canada data released this week.

The number of returning Canadian residents from the U.S. totaled 2,336,872 in October, a decrease of 26.3% compared to the 3,170,986 recorded during the same period last year.

“There’s still a lot of hesitation among people to travel to the U.S.,” said Amra Durakovic, a spokesperson for Flight Centre Travel Group Canada.

Political tensions stemming from tariffs imposed during the Donald Trump administration, evolving immigration and border policies, and an unfavorable exchange rate – with the Canadian dollar trading around 72 U.S. cents – continue to deter many Canadians from crossing the border, she explained.

“The uncertainty of potentially being stopped at the border is a significant stressor, in my opinion. Let’s be realistic, vacations are supposed to be stress-free,” Durakovic added.

Statistics Canada data shows that Canadian resident returns to the U.S. by automobile fell 30.2% in October to 1.6 million, while returns by air decreased 15.1% year-over-year. The decline in cross-border travel reflects a broader trend of Canadians diversifying their travel destinations.

Canadians Look Overseas

Instead, Canadians are increasingly opting for destinations further afield.

The number of Canadian residents returning from overseas destinations rose to 998,197 in October, up from 914,950 in October 2023.

Airlines such as Air Canada and WestJet have expanded their service to more destinations in Europe, South America, and Asia, catering to travelers seeking alternatives to the U.S. This expansion highlights the growing demand for international travel options among Canadian consumers.

“Confidence [among Canadian travelers] has eroded regarding travel to the U.S., but they are definitely exploring other destinations,” Durakovic noted.

She also stated that Canadians are seeking destinations where the exchange rate is more favorable.

Meanwhile, the number of trips to Canada by U.S. residents reached 1,814,406 in October, a 3% increase from the 1,760,987 recorded during the same month last year.

Durakovic suggested that the exchange rate likely played a significant role in this increase.

Overall, the number of trips to Canada by foreign residents totaled 548,992 in October, an 11.7% increase from the 491,296 recorded a year earlier.

Arrivals from Europe increased 10.5% year-over-year, while those from Asia rose 14.9%.
