A Chilean researcher has blended science and poetry in a novel book exploring the history of Earth and the origins of the Andes mountains. Ramiro Bustamante, an investigator at the IEB (Instituto de Ecología y Biodiversidad), recently released “Geodécimas,” which uses a traditional poetic form to explain complex geological processes.

The book aims to make scientific concepts accessible through the use of “décimas,” a popular form of Spanish-language poetry. Bustamante’s work details how stardust ultimately formed the Andes mountain range, presenting scientific information in a creative and engaging way. This approach reflects his belief that “the scientific method has a first moment that is a poetic act.”

“Geodécimas” similarly examines “décimas telúricas,” which highlight the intricacies of natural phenomena like earthquakes, droughts, and tsunamis. However, the book doesn’t solely focus on the destructive power of these events. it also emphasizes the resilience of life and its ability to adapt. According to the IEB, the book exposes the complexity of these events and the capacity of life to overcome them.

The project features illustrations by María Cristina Espinoza and offers a sensitive exploration of Earth’s processes and its connection to life. The innovative approach to science communication could inspire new methods for engaging the public with complex scientific topics. The book’s release comes as interest grows in interdisciplinary approaches to understanding and communicating scientific information.

Bustamante expresses concern about humanity’s impact on the planet, stating, “And yet, we are destroying the Earth.” This sentiment underscores the book’s broader message about the importance of environmental awareness, and stewardship.
