American Tennis Player Christian Harrison Qualifies for ATP Finals After Battling Multiple Surgeries

American doubles player Christian Harrison has qualified for the prestigious Nitto ATP Finals in Turin, Italy, capping off an inspiring career marked by overcoming significant health challenges.

Harrison, 31, has endured eight surgeries throughout his career, beginning with a bone infection in his left femur at age 14. He described the initial pain as a “constant cramp,” but it was ultimately diagnosed as a serious bone infection that, untreated, could have led to amputation. “Luckily they have better ways to treat it now and I considered myself pretty lucky at that point,” Harrison said. Following the initial infection, he faced a series of further surgeries including hip, shoulder, wrist, and adductor procedures, keeping him sidelined for years.

Despite the setbacks, Harrison remained determined to compete at the highest level, drawing motivation from his brother Ryan Harrison’s successful tennis career. He eventually climbed to the Top 200 in the PIF ATP Rankings and reached the semi-finals of an ATP Tour event in Delray Beach in 2021. A foot injury sustained during a Wimbledon match in 2022 ultimately led him to focus on doubles play, a decision that has proven fruitful. The ATP Finals represent the culmination of the regular season and feature the top eight players and doubles teams in the world.

Partnering with Evan King, Harrison expressed gratitude for the opportunity to compete alongside the world’s best. “To be in this situation, it makes me appreciate it,” Harrison stated. “It’s a good reminder that everything you’re doing is worth it for your own reasons.” Harrison and King will begin play in Turin today, hoping to make a strong showing against the top doubles teams in the world.
