Belgium is joining international efforts to raise awareness and funding for cystic fibrosis (CF), a genetic disorder affecting an estimated 70,000 people worldwide [[3]]. Approximately 1,400 individuals in Belgium live with this life-limiting condition, which primarily impacts the lungs and digestive system, requiring intensive daily management [[1]]. A new awareness campaign launched by the Association Muco aims to shed light on the multifaceted challenges faced by those with CF, as well as the urgent need for continued medical advancements. Starting November 17, the organization will be fundraising through the sale of specially designed socks, with all proceeds benefiting CF research in the country.
Nearly 1,400 people in Belgium are living with cystic fibrosis, the most common life-limiting genetic disease in the country, and face a daily battle against severe respiratory infections, digestive issues, and demanding treatment regimens.
The condition requires ongoing care, including aerosol treatments, respiratory physiotherapy, exercise, nasal rinses, and frequent antibiotic use, often leading to hospitalizations. Despite these efforts, significant complications remain common. According to data from the country, four out of five individuals with cystic fibrosis experience pancreatic dysfunction, one in four will develop diabetes, and two in five suffer liver complications. Constipation and incontinence are also frequently reported.
An awareness campaign launched by the Association Muco aims to highlight the complexities of living with cystic fibrosis and the critical need for continued scientific research. The challenges are compounded when individuals with cystic fibrosis develop additional health conditions, placing a significant physical and emotional burden on patients. “The treatment of cystic fibrosis is already very intensive. When you add one or more other diseases, it represents an additional burden, both physically and mentally,” explains Stefan Joris.
This year’s campaign features #mucosocks, socks with a design inspired by an underwater world filled with whales and marine life. The socks are available for 15 euros per pair starting November 17 at www.mucoweek.be.
All proceeds from the sale of the socks will be directed towards cystic fibrosis research in Belgium. This fundraising effort underscores the ongoing need for investment in finding more effective treatments and, ultimately, a cure for this challenging disease.
