Lions Coach Dan Campbell Took Over Play-Calling Duties in Commanders Win
Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell assumed the role of primary offensive play caller during today’s 44-22 victory over the Washington Commanders, a move he said was intended to invigorate the team’s offensive performance.
Campbell explained after the game that he decided to take over play-calling responsibilities from offensive coordinator John Morton, believing the offense needed a spark. He emphasized, however, that Morton continued to be a vital part of the offensive decision-making process. “Let’s try something a little different,” Campbell said. “I know what I want to do, I know how I want to do it. That being said, this is a collaborative effort. I was taking input from John Morton.”
A noticeable change under Campbell’s direction was the performance of wide receiver Jameson Williams, who recorded his best game of the season with six catches for 119 yards. This comes after Morton acknowledged two weeks ago that he had not utilized Williams sufficiently in previous games. The Lions’ offensive success is crucial as they compete for playoff positioning in the NFC North.
Morton supported the decision, and Campbell indicated the change is not necessarily permanent. Officials stated they will continue to evaluate the offensive strategy moving forward.
