A man in Daugavpils, Latvia, was arrested early Tuesday after allegedly offering a bribe to police officers while driving nearly three times the legal alcohol limit, authorities said.
Police stopped the vehicle, identified as an Audi, around 12:19 a.m. on Jātnieku Street, according to a statement released by the Latgale Regional Administration of the State Police. Officers determined the driver, a 36-year-old man, was intoxicated, registering a blood alcohol content of 2.73 per mille.
The driver repeatedly offered the officers a 2,000 euro bribe in an attempt to avoid facing charges, police reported. He was subsequently taken into custody and held for further investigation.
Two criminal proceedings have been initiated against the man. One relates to operating a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol and without a valid driver’s license, a violation punishable by up to one year in prison, a short-term jail sentence, or probation, along with a five-year driving ban. The second charge stems from the alleged bribery attempt, which carries a potential sentence of up to five years in prison, a short-term jail sentence, probation, community service, or a fine.
Latvian State Police reminded the public that bribery is a criminal offense and urged drivers to refrain from attempting such acts and to avoid driving under the influence of alcohol to ensure their safety and the safety of others.
Authorities emphasized that all individuals are presumed innocent until proven guilty in accordance with the law.
