San Bernardino County Deputy Fatally Shot During Pursuit, Suspect Apprehended After Motorcycle Collision
A San Bernardino County sheriff’s deputy was fatally shot yesterday while responding to a call in Rancho Cucamonga, and the suspect was later taken into custody after being deliberately forced off his motorcycle during a high-speed chase.
The fallen deputy has been identified as Andrew Nunez, a six-year veteran of the department, who leaves behind a 2-year-old daughter and a pregnant wife. Nunez was shot at approximately 12:37 p.m. in the 12300 block of Hollyhock Drive while responding to reports of an armed man threatening a woman. He was transported to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center in Colton, where he was pronounced dead. This incident underscores the inherent dangers law enforcement officers face daily while protecting the public.
Authorities initiated a pursuit of the suspect around 1:20 p.m. as he fled on a motorcycle, reaching speeds exceeding 150 mph and at times approaching 200 mph on the 210 Freeway. According to Sheriff Shannon Dicus, “We’re embedded in sorrow. Unfortunately for our department, this has happened way too often.” In a dramatic turn of events, an off-duty sheriff’s deputy intervened at 1:35 p.m., legally ramming the suspect’s motorcycle, causing him to crash. Footage shows the suspect colliding with a vehicle before being ejected. You can find more information about pursuits and officer safety at the National Institute of Justice.
The suspect, who remains unidentified, is currently in stable condition at an area hospital. San Bernardino County District Attorney Jason Anderson stated his office plans to file charges, potentially including murder of a police officer and domestic violence, within the next two days, emphasizing the investigation is ongoing. The eastbound lanes of the 210 Freeway between Mountain Avenue and Campus Avenue were temporarily closed following the incident; check current traffic conditions here.
Officials stated they will focus on bringing the suspect to justice and supporting Deputy Nunez’s family during this difficult time.
