Lithuania Closes Border with Belarus After Repeated Airspace Violations
Lithuania closed its border with Belarus today following what officials are calling “constant violations” of its airspace by dozens of helium balloons, escalating tensions between the two nations.
Prime Minister Inga Ruginienė stated that the balloons have been entering Lithuanian airspace in recent days, and described the incidents as attempts by “autocrats” to test the resilience of the European Union and NATO. “In this way, we are again sending a signal that we are ready – and we are ready to take even the most severe actions when our airspace is violated,” she said at a press conference, adding that the armed forces would take “all necessary measures” to shoot down further balloons. Earlier this month, authorities reported some balloons were carrying smuggled cigarettes, indicating a growing trend of illicit activity across the border.
Belarus’ foreign ministry responded with a “note of protest,” claiming the border closure violates citizens’ rights and freedom of movement, and reiterated its support for dialogue. This incident occurs amid heightened alert across Europe regarding intrusions into NATO airspace, following recent violations by Russian drones and aircraft in Poland, Romania, and Estonia – a situation prompting NATO to launch the Eastern Sentry mission to reinforce its eastern flank. The increased activity highlights the ongoing security challenges stemming from the war in Ukraine.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen labeled the balloon incursions a “hybrid threat” and “destabilization,” pledging full solidarity with Lithuania. The European Union is increasingly focused on countering hybrid warfare tactics, which combine conventional and unconventional methods to destabilize nations. Officials indicated they will continue to monitor the situation closely and coordinate a response with NATO allies.
