Madrid President Cuts Mexico Trip Short, Citing Government ‘Boycott’
Isabel Díaz Ayuso, the president of the Community of Madrid, has suspended the final portion of her official visit to Mexico, alleging a coordinated “climate of boycott” orchestrated by the administration of President Claudia Sheinbaum.
The decision includes the cancellation of Ayuso’s attendance at the Platino Awards gala. According to a statement from the Community of Madrid, the Mexican government took the unprecedented step of threatening to shut down the complex where the international cinema event is held if the regional president attended.
The regional government characterized the move as a diplomatic assault, stating, “The president of Mexico has expelled Isabel Díaz Ayuso by threatening the organizers of an international cinema event. This is an unprecedented gesture against a representative of the Spanish State.”
Officials from the Community of Madrid further alleged that President Sheinbaum has targeted Ayuso with daily attacks since her arrival in Mexico on Sunday. The regional administration also claimed that Mexican authorities demanded the full names and surnames of every individual scheduled to meet with the Spanish leader.
In a scathing critique of the current political environment, the Community of Madrid asserted that the “totalitarian and violent drift of Mexico leads the country to grave anti-democratic episodes like the one being experienced today.”
Ayuso was originally scheduled to remain in the country until May 12. While the exact date of her early departure has not been disclosed, the suspension of her institutional agenda marks a sharp escalation in tensions between the leadership of Madrid and the Mexican federal government.
This diplomatic rift underscores the deepening ideological divide between the right-wing administration of the Community of Madrid and the left-wing government in Mexico City.
