National Prescription Drug Take Back Day Set for October 25th
The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) will host its National Prescription Drug Take Back Day on Saturday, October 25th, offering a safe and convenient way for the public to dispose of unwanted medications.
This initiative aims to address the ongoing opioid crisis by preventing medication misuse and accidental poisonings, which contribute to a significant number of overdose deaths each year. Unused or expired prescription drugs can be dropped off anonymously at designated locations, with no questions asked. “If you no longer use a medication, proper disposal is key,” stated Tauna Groomsmith, Program Director for Fremont County Prevention. “There is never a need to hold onto expired or unused medicine, especially prescription drugs.”
In Fremont County, residents can participate from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM at the Riverton Police Department. Fremont County Prevention is partnering with local law enforcement to promote the event and encourage residents to clean out their medicine cabinets. For those unable to attend on October 25th, permanent medication disposal locations are available throughout the county; you can find more information on safe disposal practices at Fremont County Prevention’s website.
Officials encourage families to use this as an opportunity to discuss the dangers of prescription drug misuse with their children. The DEA plans to continue these efforts to reduce the availability of potentially dangerous medications in communities nationwide.
