NYC Implements New E-Bike Safety Regulations for Delivery Workers
New York City officials today announced a comprehensive set of regulations aimed at improving the safety of e-bikes used by delivery workers, addressing growing concerns about fires and rider injuries.
The new rules, effective immediately, require all e-bikes and batteries used for commercial delivery to meet specific safety standards certified by independent testing laboratories. These standards include requirements for battery quality, charging systems, and overall bike construction. The regulations also mandate that delivery companies ensure their workers receive safety training on proper e-bike operation and battery maintenance. The move comes as lithium-ion battery fires, often linked to faulty e-bike components, have become increasingly prevalent across the five boroughs.
“The safety of New Yorkers is our top priority, and these regulations are a critical step in addressing the risks posed by unsafe e-bikes,” stated a spokesperson for the New York City Department of Transportation. “We are working to ensure that delivery workers have the equipment and knowledge they need to operate safely while continuing to provide essential services.” The city will be conducting inspections of delivery businesses to verify compliance, with penalties for violations including fines and potential suspension of operating permits. These regulations build upon existing efforts to address e-bike safety, including increased enforcement against illegal modifications and a public awareness campaign about the dangers of counterfeit batteries. The Consumer Product Safety Commission has also issued warnings about the risks associated with lithium-ion batteries, available here. Officials indicated that further measures, including potential subsidies for compliant e-bikes, are being considered to support the transition to safer equipment.
The Department of Transportation will host informational sessions for delivery companies and workers in the coming weeks to explain the new requirements and answer questions.
