F and M Train Routes to Switch in Manhattan and Queens Starting November 2025

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) announced today that the F and M train routes will swap service between Manhattan and Queens beginning on November 11, 2025.

Currently, the F train operates between Coney Island and Jamaica–179th Street, while the M train runs between Forest Hills–71st Avenue and 2nd Avenue in Manhattan. Under the planned changes, the F train will extend to Forest Hills, and the M train will operate to Jamaica–179th Street. The MTA says the switch is designed to improve service reliability and address overcrowding on both lines.

According to the MTA, the route change will require significant infrastructure work and signaling upgrades, which will be completed prior to the November 2025 implementation date. This adjustment aims to better distribute ridership and provide more direct access to key destinations for commuters in both boroughs. “This is a complex undertaking, but one we believe will ultimately benefit our riders,” said an MTA spokesperson. “By reconfiguring these routes, we can optimize service and provide a more efficient and reliable commute.” The Federal Railroad Administration provides oversight of major changes to rail infrastructure like this one; learn more about their role here.

The MTA will hold public information sessions in the coming months to provide further details and address community concerns regarding the route swap.
