Sweden Launches App to Expedite Border Control Ahead of EU-Wide System

Non-EU travelers to Sweden will have access to a new mobile application starting October 12th designed to streamline border crossings when the European Union’s Entry/Exit System (EES) goes live, potentially easing concerns about increased wait times.

The EES, over a decade in development, will require all non-EU citizens entering the Schengen zone to provide biometric data – fingerprints and facial scans – upon arrival. This data will be used to enhance security and law enforcement capabilities across the region; according to Louise Wahlberg, project manager for the Swedish police implementation of the EES, “If you find fingerprints at a crime scene… you can send the fingerprints and see if a person with this fingerprint has been registered in the system.” The app, developed by the EU’s border agency Frontex with support from Swedish programmers, allows travelers to submit passport information and a selfie in advance.

While participation is voluntary, travelers using the app will benefit from dedicated passport control queues at Stockholm Arlanda and potentially Göteborg Landvetter airports, with tests indicating a time saving of approximately 15 seconds per passenger. The app will also be functional at Stockholm Bromma, Malmö, and Luleå Airports, though without dedicated queues. Those without smartphones or who prefer not to use the app can still proceed through standard EES channels. You can learn more about the Entry/Exit System on the European Commission’s website.

Sweden is the first EU country to implement this app due to its lack of existing automated e-gates at its airports, making the application a crucial tool for managing the anticipated increase in processing time. Approximately 30 airlines operating in Sweden have been briefed on the app and will be informing passengers about its availability.

Officials stated that the app’s rollout will be closely monitored, and further adjustments will be made based on user feedback and operational performance.

Non-EU travellers to Sweden will be able to use a new phone app to reduce the time taken getting through border control when the new Schengen Entry/Exit System comes into force on October 12th. Sweden will initially be the only EU country to have the app up and running.
