Fehérvár AV19 edged past the Vienna Capitals 2-1 Friday night in a tightly contested Austrian Hockey League matchup at the MET Arena. The victory was crucial for both teams, who entered the game separated by just two points in the standings and vying to remain in the top ten.

Adding another layer of intrigue to the contest was the presence of Vienna Capitals head coach Kevin Constantine, a familiar face in Fehérvár. Constantine previously managed both Fehérvár and the Hungarian national team with success before unexpectedly resigning from both positions shortly before the start of August’s training camp. He briefly took the helm at Csíkszereda before accepting the offer in Vienna.

Both teams came out with energy, eager to shake off any holiday sluggishness. The early stages saw Vienna generate the more dangerous chances, but the momentum shifted as the period progressed, resulting in a back-and-forth battle. Justin Richards had the best opportunity for Fehérvár, while Rasmus Reijola was forced to deny a shot from Scott Kosmachuk.

Fehérvár struck first just under a minute into the second period. A crisp passing play culminated in Donát Horváth receiving a feed from Anze Kuralt and firing a low shot past Evan Cowley, with traffic screening the Capitals’ goaltender. Fehérvár continued to press, and the intensity led to a scuffle involving Vienna’s Armin Preiser and Kristóf Németh, resulting in a penalty for Preiser. The home side capitalized on their momentum, extending their lead in the 28th minute with a nearly identical goal, this time finished by Joel Messner. Fehérvár successfully killed off a subsequent penalty, and Richards nearly added another, but Cowley stood tall.

Vienna responded early in the third period, cutting the deficit to 2-1 when Jérémy Grégoire capitalized on a loose puck in front of the net just over three minutes into the frame. The Capitals then turned up the pressure, forcing Reijola into a series of key saves. Fehérvár weathered the storm, with Reijola and several key blocked shots preserving their lead, ultimately securing the 2-1 victory.

COACHES’ COMMENTS
Ted Dent: – Both teams played very well, it was a fast-paced game with plenty of chances and a physical edge. We settled down a bit in the third period, even though Vienna pushed hard. We did a good job blocking shots, and Rasmus Reijola had a great performance in goal.
Kevin Constantine: – We were a little late getting our game going in the third, but we had a lot of opportunities. Fehérvár was the better team in the first period and early in the second. Overall, it was a fun game with a great atmosphere in this fantastic arena.
