NYC Launches Free Childcare Navigator Website for All Residents
New York City residents now have access to a free, comprehensive website designed to connect families with affordable, high-quality childcare options, the United Federation of Teachers announced today.
The NYC Childcare Navigator, originally created for UFT members, is now available to all New Yorkers, offering a searchable database of over 12,000 licensed childcare programs. The platform allows users to filter by zip code, cost, hours, language, and special needs accommodations, and even indicates potential eligibility for financial aid programs. This launch comes as childcare costs continue to strain family budgets across the city.
“It’s hard enough living in the city of New York,” said UFT president Michael Mulgrew. “And we understand how life-changing it can be for a family if they can get access to high-quality, safe child care.” The website was developed by Upfront and Mirza, who consolidated data from multiple agencies to create a centralized resource. For more information on navigating childcare options, visit the Administration for Children and Families website.
The Navigator also benefits childcare providers, particularly smaller, home-based programs, by helping them fill open spots and maintain stable enrollment. Users can search anonymously or create accounts to save favorites and access application assistance, including live chat support in multiple languages. Finding affordable childcare is a significant challenge for many New York families; according to a recent report by the 5 Boro Institute, many centers operate on “razor-thin” margins.
Officials stated the UFT will continue to update the Navigator with the latest information and resources to ensure it remains a valuable tool for families and providers alike.
