Labor Protests, Olympics Prep, and Mpox Cases Mark News in Southern California

Southern California is facing a busy news cycle with planned protests against the Trump administration, preparations for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, and the confirmation of additional cases of a more severe strain of mpox.

A prominent labor union, Service Employees International Union Local 721, is urging residents to participate in “No Kings Day” protests scheduled across the region on Saturday. During a news conference outside City Hall yesterday, union officials emphasized the need to resist the current administration. “The Los Angeles community will show the Trump administration and our great nation that we have no kings, and I repeat, no kings in this country,” said Martin Manteca, organizing director of SEIU Local 721 and the California Gig Workers Union. These demonstrations reflect growing political activism in the region as the 2024 election cycle continues to unfold.

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass marked 1,000 days until the Opening Ceremony of the 2028 Olympics by announcing a “Games for All” vision and signing an executive directive to streamline city processes. The announcement took place on Venice Beach, a future competition venue, and Bass stated, “The 2028 Games are an opportunity to reimagine our infrastructure, strengthen community resilience, and expand opportunity for all Angelenos — a true ‘Games for All.’” The Olympics are expected to bring significant economic investment to the city, but also pose logistical challenges. More information about the LA28 Olympics can be found on the official LA28 website.

The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health confirmed a third case of a more severe strain of mpox, known as clade I, in a patient who had not traveled to areas where the virus is typically found. This is the third such case confirmed nationally. Clade I mpox generally causes more severe illness than the clade II strain that led to the 2022-23 outbreak; symptoms include rash, fever, and swollen lymph nodes. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention provides detailed information about mpox and its different strains. Officials stated that the patients were hospitalized but are now recovering at home.

Health officials continue to monitor the situation and urge caution, while city preparations for the Olympics and planned protests continue as scheduled.
