Protestors March to Jefferson City Ahead of Missouri Execution

A group of demonstrators began a two-day march from Columbia to Jefferson City today to protest the scheduled execution of Lance Shockley, set to take place tomorrow.

Missouri Governor Mike Kehoe denied clemency for Shockley yesterday, prompting the “Let Lance Live, Gov. Kehoe!” walk. Approximately ten people began the 31-mile journey, hearing from speakers representing Death Penalty Action, Journey of Hope — From Violence to Healing, Missourians to Abolish the Death Penalty, and Mid-Missouri Fellowship of Reconciliation outside the Boone County Courthouse. The marchers walked down Broadway east to U.S. 63 and continued to Ashland, where they plan to stay overnight.

Shockley was convicted in 2009 for the 2005 murder of Missouri State Highway Patrol Sgt. Carl Graham Jr. in Carter County. He has maintained his innocence throughout the legal process. A University of California, Irvine survey revealed significant support for clemency across the political spectrum in Missouri, with 79% of Democrats, 67% of Independents, and 53% of Republicans favoring it. This case highlights the ongoing debate surrounding capital punishment and potential for judicial overreach, as Missouri and Indiana are the only states allowing judges to unilaterally impose the death penalty. More information about the death penalty can be found at the Death Penalty Information Center.

Marchers are expected to arrive at Clay Street Trailhead Plaza in Jefferson City on Tuesday morning, hoping to be joined by supporters for the final stretch. Seven vigils are planned across the state, including in St. Louis, Kansas City, Columbia, and Bonne Terre, alongside a virtual vigil. Governor Kehoe’s office has not issued a further statement beyond the initial clemency denial.
