Android Users Can Now Block App Internet Access Without Rooting
Android users can now restrict internet connectivity for individual applications without requiring root access, offering greater control over data usage and privacy.
While Android has historically lacked a native feature to block internet access for specific apps, a free application called NetGuard provides a workaround. Available on both Google Play and F-Droid, NetGuard operates by creating a local VPN to filter internet traffic, allowing users to selectively disable Wi-Fi and cellular data access for installed applications. The app displays a list of all installed apps with clear indicators – green for allowed, red for blocked – making it easy to manage permissions.
Users can toggle internet access by simply tapping the Wi-Fi or cellular data icon next to each app. NetGuard also includes a “Lockdown Mode” which blocks all internet access by default, requiring users to manually whitelist applications like WhatsApp or Gmail. This feature is particularly useful for users concerned about background data usage or potential privacy intrusions. How To Block Internet For A Specific App
