Sacramento Man Sentenced to 76 Years to Life for 2023 Murder Under Bridge

A Sacramento County Superior Court judge sentenced Richard Bradford, 62, to 76 years to life in prison today for the second-degree murder of Joshua Rash, 37, who was fatally shot while protecting his dog in October 2023.

The shooting occurred in the 8200 block of Gerber Road, where Rash was living in an encampment under a bridge. Prosecutors stated that Bradford approached Rash with a handgun, intending to steal his dog, and when Rash attempted to defend his animal with a metal pole, Bradford shot him. Police discovered Rash’s body with his dog remaining faithfully by his side. This case highlights the vulnerabilities faced by individuals experiencing homelessness and their companions.

Bradford was sentenced on August 5 after a jury found him guilty of second-degree murder and determined he used a firearm during the commission of the crime. Court records show Bradford had two prior strike convictions, classifying him as a habitual offender. California’s sentencing laws often result in lengthy prison terms for repeat offenders. More information about California sentencing guidelines can be found at the California Courts website.

Authorities have not released details regarding the dog’s current whereabouts. The Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office is committed to prosecuting violent crimes and ensuring justice for victims, as detailed in their official statement. Officials stated they expect no further developments in the case.
