The club has simultaneously secured centre Artūras Gudaitis with a contract extension, naming him the new team captain as they navigate this transition.

Vilnius’s professional basketball team, Rytas, has supported captain Gytis Radzevičius’s pursuit of career advancement, allowing him to explore opportunities with EuroLeague clubs. The decision reflects the team’s commitment to fostering player development and recognizing contributions to their success.

According to Artūras Jomantas, the club’s sports director, Radzevičius’s growth made this outcome natural.

“It’s bittersweet to see Gytis go, but we’re also thrilled for him,” Jomantas said. “Gytis has developed into an elite player and a strong personality during his time with Rytas, so interest from EuroLeague clubs was expected. While it’s not easy to say goodbye to our captain mid-season, we celebrate his progress and the fact that our organization serves as a stepping stone for players to reach the highest level.”

The departure was a mutual decision, ensuring both Radzevičius’s aspirations and the club’s interests were respected. “We didn’t want to stand in the way of Gytis’s dream, especially since all parties considered each other’s interests fairly,” Jomantas added. “I want to express my sincere gratitude to Gytis for all the years, for his heart on the court, and wish him the greatest success in this new chapter. I have no doubt our paths will cross again.”

During his time with Rytas, Radzevičius secured two Lithuanian Basketball League championships, sponsored by Betsson, and became a beloved figure for fans, serving as an inspiration to young athletes with his dedication to achieving his goals. This news highlights the importance of supporting athletes’ career progression and recognizing their contributions to team success.

Radzevičius spent seven years within the club’s system, including nearly two years with the Rytas reserve team.

“Gytis is an example for every young player in our club – demonstrating that you should never give up when facing difficulties or challenges, but instead work hard towards your goals,” Jomantas stated. “He’s one of the best examples of a player who can show leadership through actions, not just words, with dedication in both training and competition.”

As he departs Vilnius, Radzevičius expressed his gratitude to the organization.

“I want to offer my sincere and heartfelt thanks to the entire Vilnius Rytas family,” Radzevičius said. “Vilnius is and always will be home to me, and representing my hometown was a huge honor and responsibility that I cherished every day. I feel it’s time to take the next step in my career and embrace a new challenge. I sincerely thank the entire Rytas organization, the coaches, my teammates, and, of course, the fans. Your support meant the world to me. Thank you for everything – a part of my heart will always remain here.”

Alongside Radzevičius’s departure, Rytas announced a new agreement with center Artūras Gudaitis, extending his contract through the end of the 2026-2027 season.

Gudaitis will also assume new responsibilities, taking on the role of team captain.

“Artūras demonstrated a desire to stay with our club, even after receiving a lucrative offer from abroad, and we greatly appreciate that,” Jomantas commented. “This season, we unofficially had two captains – Gytis and Artūras. So, from the start of our conversations, we felt obligated to retain Artūras, whose voice and leadership in the locker room are extremely important. I want to thank both the player and his representatives for their smooth and efficient cooperation.”

Vilnius Rytas stated they are actively searching for reinforcements in the player market and once again thanked Gytis Radzevičius for his loyalty, exemplary dedication, and shared golden moments. They wish him success in conquering EuroLeague arenas. This strategic team management underscores the dynamic nature of professional sports and the ongoing pursuit of competitive excellence.
