Senior Hamas Official Walks Out of Interview Amid Questions on Gaza Impact

A senior Hamas official, Mousa Abu Marzouk, abruptly ended an interview today with the pan-Arab al-Ghad channel after being pressed on the consequences of the October 7, 2023, attack on the people of Gaza.

The interviewer challenged Hamas’s claim that the October 7 assault would “liberate Palestine,” to which Abu Marzouk responded, “It is illogical that 1,500 fighters would liberate Palestine.” He then demanded “respectful questions,” prompting a response from the interviewer who stated he was voicing concerns “of the Palestinian street, the question of the Gaza Strip.” Refusing to engage further, Abu Marzouk demanded the broadcast be terminated.

Following the walkout, the host commented that the incident “unfortunately reflects Hamas’s way of thinking and its evasion of answers and questions regarding the current phase, in light of the destruction of the Palestinian people.” This public display of defensiveness comes as Hamas faces increasing scrutiny over its handling of the conflict and the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Abu Marzouk previously told The New York Times in February that he would not have supported the October 7 attack had he known the extent of the devastation it would cause in Gaza.

Hamas’s popularity within Gaza has reportedly declined in recent years, with residents increasingly blaming the group for the ongoing war and its devastating effects. Sporadic protests against Hamas have occurred, with the group attempting to suppress dissent. The October 7 attack, which resulted in the deaths of approximately 1,200 Israelis and the abduction of 251 hostages, triggered the current conflict, which has led to over 66,000 reported Palestinian deaths or injuries, according to the Hamas-run Gaza health ministry – a figure that remains unverified. For more information on the ongoing conflict, see the Council on Foreign Relations.

Officials have stated that further diplomatic efforts are underway to secure the release of remaining hostages and establish a lasting ceasefire.
