The Haute-Loire Department in France recently received the “D’Or de la biodiversité territoriale” award in Lille for an innovative environmental initiative focused on local seed production.

The department has committed to producing its own prairie seeds for use in landscaping projects surrounding roadways and buildings. This approach, developed in partnership with the National Botanical Conservatory of the Massif Central, is designed to maximize the effectiveness of seeding efforts while reducing maintenance costs and combating invasive plant species.

The initiative, which carries the “Végétal local” label, also aims to preserve local plant heritage. This focus on native species is increasingly recognized as important for supporting healthy ecosystems and biodiversity.

According to the department, the project has proven successful locally and has garnered national recognition. The “D’Or” awards provide a platform for departments to share positive and sustainable initiatives that improve the lives of citizens.

In a related announcement at the ceremony, Karine Vincent was awarded the “Directrice de cabinet de l’année” (Chief of Staff of the Year) award. “This is a new recognition that I obviously share with my partner Mathieu Freyssenet-Peyrard, my team, and my president,” Vincent said on social media. “It’s really our work that is being recognized through this distinction. And that’s nice.”
