Russian Helicopter Crash in Dagestan Kills Five
A Russian Ka-226 helicopter crashed in the Republic of Dagestan yesterday, November 7, resulting in the deaths of five people, including four employees of the Kizlyar Electromechanical Plant (KEMZ).
The crash occurred near the village of Achi-Su in Dagestan, a Russian republic located along the Caspian Sea. KEMZ, a defense company sanctioned by the United States for its support of Russia’s war in Ukraine, identified the deceased as including its deputy general director of construction and transport support, along with three other employees and the helicopter’s flight mechanic. Two individuals sustained injuries. KEMZ specializes in aviation equipment, developing systems for aircraft used in the conflict in Ukraine.
Footage of the crash circulated on social media, though the cause remains under investigation. Russia’s federal aviation agency, Rosaviatsia, has classified the incident as a “disaster” and will lead the official inquiry. The Ka-226 is a twin-engine utility helicopter with a capacity of up to seven passengers; it was reportedly damaged in a Ukrainian military intelligence operation in July 2024, according to the Institute for the Study of War.
This incident occurs as Russia’s aviation sector faces significant challenges due to Western sanctions, hindering access to essential maintenance parts. Rosaviatsia has stated it will participate in the investigation to determine the cause of the crash.
