Huawei is challenging the dominance of Apple in the premium wireless earbud market with the release of its FreeBuds Pro 5. the new earbuds, unveiled today in China, boast the company’s next-generation NearLink technology and an emphasis on improved audio and noise cancellation capabilities [[1]], [[2]]. While the company has a history of releasing competitive audio products – though some recent models have faced criticism [[3]] – the FreeBuds Pro 5 represent a deliberate move to position Huawei as a leader in wireless audio innovation.

Huawei has unveiled its FreeBuds Pro 5 earbuds, positioning them as direct competition to Apple’s forthcoming AirPods Pro 3. The new earbuds feature Huawei’s NearLink technology, capable of transmitting audio at speeds up to 4.6 megabits per second. This technology supports a range of audio codecs – including AAC, SBC, L2HC, and LDAC – to ensure compatibility for users whose devices may not support the latest advancements.

Each earbud incorporates dual sound drivers and a Kirin A3 processor. Huawei states that the FreeBuds Pro 5 also boast significantly improved active noise cancellation (ANC), offering three times the efficiency of previous models, thanks to integrated microphones. The earbuds are also IP57-rated for dust and water resistance.

However, battery life is rated at 5 hours with ANC enabled. The Huawei FreeBuds Pro 5 are currently available in China for 1,449 yuan (~$205 USD) and come in four color options. As of today, November 26, 2023, Huawei has not announced plans for a global release.

The launch of the FreeBuds Pro 5 underscores the ongoing innovation in the wireless earbud market, as companies strive to deliver enhanced audio quality and noise cancellation features. Competition in this space is rapidly intensifying, pushing manufacturers to integrate cutting-edge technologies like NearLink to differentiate their products.
