iPhone Air 2 Launch Delayed, Future Uncertain
Apple has reportedly delayed the launch of its next iPhone Air model, removing it from the product schedule without a confirmed new release date.
The second-generation iPhone Air, initially planned for release next fall alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and a foldable iPhone, was intended to be lighter and feature increased battery capacity. Development included plans to incorporate vapor chamber cooling technology, previously seen in the iPhone 17 Pro, and potentially a dual-camera system. While the project hasn’t been canceled outright, with some engineers and manufacturers continuing work, the removal from the schedule is described as “rare if not unprecedented.”
This decision follows lower-than-expected sales of the current iPhone Air, with production partner Foxconn already scaling back operations. Reports indicate Foxconn has dismantled most of its production lines for the first-generation iPhone Air and anticipates halting all production by the end of the month, while Luxshare ended its production at the end of October. This shift in Apple’s product roadmap could impact the company’s strategy for offering a mid-range iPhone option. For more on Apple’s product lineup, see Apple’s official iPhone page.
Currently, Apple expects to launch three new iPhones next fall – the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and the iPhone Fold – with the standard iPhone 18 and a budget-friendly iPhone 18e slated for a spring 2027 release. There is a possibility the iPhone Air 2 could still launch in spring 2027 alongside those models, though a significant redesign may be underway. Apple officials have not yet provided a new timeline for the iPhone Air 2, but continue to evaluate the project’s future.
Apple is reportedly delaying the launch of the iPhone Air 2. The Information reports that Apple recently “notified engineers and suppliers that they were taking the next iPhone Air off the schedule without providing a new release date.” The report cites “three people involved in the project.”
iPhone Air 2 release delayed
The second-generation iPhone Air was initially set to launch next fall alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone Fold. According to The Information, the device was planned to be even lighter than the current iPhone Air and have a larger battery capacity.
Apple was also working on bringing the vapor chamber cooling system that first debuted on the iPhone 17 Pro to the iPhone Air 2. A separate supply chain rumor last week said the iPhone Air 2 may have also had two cameras.
Unfortunately, all of this is now up in the air. The report says that Apple has “stopped short of canceling the next iPhone Air.” In fact, some Apple engineers and manufacturers are “still working on it.”
That said, however, there’s no release date on the books and this decision to remove the iPhone Air 2 from the schedule is “rare if not unprecedented.”
The Information attributes this decision to lower-than-expected sales of the iPhone Air so far. The report says Foxconn has “dismantled all but one and a half of its production lines for the first version and expects to halt all production by the end of the month.”
Luxshare, Apple’s other iPhone Air production partner, ended its production of the device at the end of October.
With this news, we now expect Apple to launch three new iPhones next fall: the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and iPhone Fold.
The base model iPhone 18 and the iPhone 18e are expected to launch the following year, in spring of 2027.
The Information does provide one glimmer of hope for iPhone Air fans:
It’s possible the product is undergoing a significant redesign, and one person said Apple could still release the second-generation iPhone Air as soon as spring 2027 alongside the standard iPhone 18 and budget-friendly 18e
9to5Mac’s Take
If true, this news is quite disheartening. I’ve been using the iPhone Air since its launch in September and still enjoy the thin and light design even more than I expected to.
The best part of the iPhone Air to me is the combination of the ultra-thin design and big screen. The iPhone Air features a 6.5-inch screen, making it bigger than the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Pro, yet still far thinner and lighter.
I think Apple still hasn’t learned that not every iPhone can be a best-seller. It reacted in the same way with the iPhone mini and iPhone plus form factors.
