Israeli Airstrikes Hit Southern Lebanon Amid Push for Expanded Buffer Zone

A series of Israeli airstrikes across southern Lebanon have left several people dead and wounded, coinciding with a strategic move by the Israeli government to establish a wider security perimeter within Lebanese territory.

Israeli Airstrikes Hit Southern Lebanon Amid Push for Expanded Buffer Zone

Reports indicate that at least five people were killed in raids targeting various locations in the south. Additional strikes on Arab Salim and Shbrayha resulted in three fatalities, although other raids targeted Qalawiyeh, Al-Housh, Arnoun, and the region between Ain Baal and Aytit.

In Jouiya, military operations involved the targeting of a motorcycle and a “Rapid”. Meanwhile, a dawn raid on Bafliyeh caused injuries and damaged several residential homes, according to reports of Israeli raids on South Lebanon.

These military actions follow a strategic announcement by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on March 25, 2026, regarding the creation of a “defensive buffer zone” extending toward the Litani River. Netanyahu stated that the goal of the security zone is to prevent infiltrations into the Galilee and the northern border, while specifically pushing back the threat of anti-tank missiles.

The scale of this proposed zone is significant. Reports from Israeli Channel 14 indicate plans to extend the military presence at least 8 kilometers beyond the international border. Such a move would result in Israel controlling an area equivalent to approximately 10% of Lebanon’s total landmass.

The push for a wider buffer zone underscores Israel’s intent to establish a physical barrier against cross-border attacks, though it marks a substantial escalation in the military footprint within southern Lebanon.
