Jakarta and surrounding regions are bracing for several days of extreme weather,as heavy rainfall and strong winds continue to batter the area since Monday,January 12,2026. The Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has issued widespread alerts, warning of potential hydrometeorological disasters including floods, landslides, and fallen trees. The current conditions are linked to the typical high-risk season for such events, compounded by the ongoing La Niña phenomenon, and are expected to disrupt daily life across the Greater Jakarta (Jabodetabek) area and the Thousand Islands.

Heavy rainfall and strong winds have impacted Jakarta and surrounding areas since Monday morning, January 12, 2026, prompting alerts for potential hydrometeorological disasters. The severe weather is expected to continue for several days, raising concerns for residents and infrastructure.

Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) forecasts moderate to heavy rain across Jakarta and its vicinity from morning through evening. The agency predicts these extreme conditions will persist for three days, from January 11 to January 13, 2026, potentially disrupting daily life and increasing the risk of flooding and other environmental hazards.

According to a weather report shared on the BMKG’s official Instagram account @infobmkg, the heavy rain isn’t limited to the Jakarta Special Capital Region. Several surrounding areas within the Greater Jakarta (Jabodetabek) region, including the Thousand Islands, are also under an early warning for extreme weather.

The BMKG has issued an alert for moderate to heavy rain in the following areas:

  • North Jakarta

  • Central Jakarta

  • West Jakarta

  • East Jakarta

  • South Jakarta

  • Thousand Islands

  • Bekasi Regency

  • Bekasi City

  • Bogor Regency

  • Bogor City

  • Depok City

In addition to the heavy rain, the BMKG has issued an early warning for strong winds expected to continue through Tuesday. These winds could cause trees to fall, disrupt power lines, and create hazardous conditions in densely populated urban areas.

Areas under a Strong Wind Early Warning:

  • Tangerang City

  • South Tangerang City

  • Tangerang Regency

  • North Jakarta

  • Central Jakarta

  • West Jakarta

  • East Jakarta

  • South Jakarta

  • Thousand Islands

The BMKG warns that these areas are potentially vulnerable to disasters such as floods, flash floods, landslides, and falling trees due to the combination of heavy rain and strong winds. Residents, particularly those living in flood-prone areas, near rivers, and on unstable terrain, are urged to exercise increased caution.

The agency noted that January through March is typically a high-risk period for hydrometeorological disasters, coinciding with the waning phase of a weak La Niña, which contributes to increased rainfall across Indonesia, including Jakarta and surrounding regions.
