Commanders Quarterback Jayden Daniels Suffers Dislocated Elbow
Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels sustained a dislocated left elbow during Sunday night’s game against the Seattle Seahawks, an injury that casts significant doubt on the remainder of his promising rookie season.
The injury occurred with under eight minutes remaining in the fourth quarter as Daniels was sacked near the Seattle goal line, causing his left arm to bend backward severely. He immediately signaled for medical attention and was attended to by team staff as teammates knelt nearby. Daniels ultimately chose to walk off the field with assistance, his arm secured in an air cast. Right guard Sam Cosmi described the scene as “gut-wrenching,” adding, “You could just hear the air being taken out of everybody in the stadium.”
Head coach Dan Quinn acknowledged the difficult situation, stating, “I’m just gutted by it. I’m just bummed.” He explained that the play was not a designed scramble, but a standard run or short pass, and expressed regret that the injury occurred. The Commanders were already facing a steep 38-7 deficit when Daniels was injured, and had previously lost cornerback Marshon Lattimore and receiver/returner Luke McCaffrey to injuries during the game, adding to a long list of sidelined players this season. This latest setback further jeopardizes the Commanders’ playoff hopes after a disappointing start to the year; you can find the current NFL standings here.
Backup quarterback Marcus Mariota reported that Daniels was in “good spirits” after the game, and that teammates rallied around him. Daniels will undergo further testing today to determine the full extent of the injury and his expected recovery timeline. The Commanders (3-6) face a challenging schedule ahead, including a game in Madrid against the Miami Dolphins.
