Jon Dahl Tomasson is poised to become the new head coach of Anderlecht, according to reports from Voetbal International on Thursday morning. The 49-year-classic Danish manager is nearing an agreement with the Belgian top-flight club.
Anderlecht has been linked to several prominent coaching candidates in recent weeks, including Paul Simonis, Maarten Martens and Alfred Schreuder.
Following discussions with multiple potential managers, the club has settled on Tomasson as the successor to the recently dismissed Besnik Hasi. Tomasson is available after being relieved of his duties as the head coach of Sweden’s national team.
Tomasson was unable to guide Sweden to qualification for the World Cup through the standard qualifying process. The Swedish squad, featuring star forwards Alexander Isak and Viktor Gyökeres, will now attempt to reach the tournament via the intercontinental play-offs with Graham Potter at the helm.
As a club manager, Tomasson has previously held positions at Excelsior, Roda JC, Malmö, and Blackburn Rovers. He led Malmö to two Swedish league titles during his tenure.
This marks a successful week for the Tomasson family, as his 17-year-old son, Luca, extended his contract with Feyenoord on Wednesday.
Anderlecht returns to action Thursday evening, facing Royal Antwerp in the second leg of the Croky Cup semi-final. The 34-time Belgian champions will necessitate to overcome a 1-0 deficit to advance.
