Keiko Fujimori Leads Peru Presidential Race, Heading Toward Runoff

Keiko Fujimori has emerged as the frontrunner in Peru’s presidential election, positioning herself to advance to a runoff vote. Early data and rapid counts indicate a fragmented field, with Fujimori maintaining a lead over several trailing candidates.

According to a rapid count by Transparencia-Ipsos that had processed 95.7% of the votes, Fujimori led with 17.1% of the vote. The data further revealed a “triple technical tie” for the second-place position, underscoring the competitive nature of the race for the final spot in the runoff.

This trend was mirrored in earlier reports. An early exit poll from Ipsos Peru showed Fujimori leading with 16.6%. Reports from EL PAÍS indicated that with 37% of ballots counted, Fujimori was already set to advance to the second round.

The election process has not been without challenges. Reports from Al Jazeera noted that the race is heading toward a runoff amid “logistical chaos.” Meanwhile, official tallies continue as the National Office of Electoral Processes (ONPE) manages the count across all regions of Peru, with official results reaching 71.146%.

The current trajectory suggests a high likelihood of a second-round contest, as no single candidate appears to have secured an absolute majority in the first round. This outcome highlights the deep political divisions within the country and the difficulty of achieving a consensus candidate.

Further polling data, including an exit poll commissioned by Perú 21 and Latina and conducted by Ipsos, continues to support the projection of a runoff. Other outlets, such as Ojo-Público, have likewise cited the Ipsos rapid count showing Fujimori in the lead with a tight race for second place.
