At least 30 people were injured Friday, January 2, in a Russian strike on Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city, according to Mayor Ihor Terekhov. The attack underscores the continued vulnerability of civilian areas amid the ongoing conflict.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said preliminary reports indicated the city was hit by two missiles that struck residential areas. One building was completely destroyed, according to Oleh Syniehubov, head of the Kharkiv Regional Military Administration, who added that people may still be trapped under the rubble.

Nineteen people sought medical attention, including a six-month-old infant. One individual is in serious condition, RBC Ukraine reports.

At Least 27 Buildings Damaged in Kharkiv

As of 7 p.m. local time, at least 27 buildings were damaged in the Kyiv and Shevchenkivskyi districts, the Kharkiv City Council said in a Telegram post. The attack also shattered 872 windows in apartments and 104 in building entrances, and damaged 12 roofs, officials added.

The Russian Ministry of Defense, however, stated it did not strike within the city of Kharkiv on January 2. The ministry attributed the incident “with a high probability” to the alleged detonation of ammunition at a local shopping center.
