President Lai Ching-te’s satisfaction rating has risen 1.5 percentage points to 45.3%, according to a new poll released by Chung T’ung Media on April 22, 2026. His trust rating stands at 45.2%, both figures exceeding the proportion of respondents who expressed dissatisfaction or distrust.
The survey, conducted between April 19 and April 20, 2026, with 1,071 valid responses, also shows the Democratic Progressive Party leading in party support at 34.1%, ahead of the Kuomintang at 20.8% and the Taiwan People’s Party at 9.5%.
Regarding the meeting between Kuomintang Chair Lily Chiang and Chinese President Xi Jinping, 44.5% of respondents said the encounter would not benefit the KMT in the upcoming local elections, compared to 33.2% who viewed it as advantageous.
Among those who saw no benefit, 27.5% considered it possibly unfavorable and 16.9% deemed it definitely unfavorable. Of those who saw potential gains, 25.7% thought it was possibly beneficial and 7.5% believed it was definitely beneficial.
When analyzed by party affiliation, over 70% of Democratic Progressive Party supporters said the meeting would not help the KMT. While about six in ten supporters of the KMT and Taiwan People’s Party viewed it positively, notable dissent existed within those groups — 19.2% of KMT supporters and 30.5% of Taiwan People’s Party supporters said the meeting would not be advantageous.
The poll also revealed age-based differences, with those aged 20 to 29 most likely to view the meeting as beneficial, at 45.8%.
Geographically, Kaohsiung recorded the highest satisfaction with Lai’s performance among the six special municipalities at 57.3%, while Taipei recorded the highest dissatisfaction.
