Latvian athletes are competing on the world stage as the winter sports season gets underway. Despite facing challenges-including illness and injury-Latvian skiers and bobsled/skeleton teams have begun their Olympic qualifying campaigns with promising early results in Austria and Italy [source]. This report details the performances of Dženifera Ģērmane and her fellow Latvian teammates as they vie for a spot at the upcoming Winter Olympics.
Latvian skier Dženifera Ģērmane has made a strong start to the Olympic season, currently sitting in 15th place in the World Cup slalom standings after two events.
On Sunday in Gurgl, Austria, Ģērmane posted the 18th-fastest time in the first run of the season’s second slalom race, then climbed to sixth-fastest in the second run, finishing 14th overall. The performance came despite battling a back issue and experiencing cold symptoms – including a cough and congestion. She previously finished 21st in Levi, Finland, last week and holds 28 points for 15th place in the overall World Cup standings. Liene Bondare also competed in Gurgl but did not finish the first run. American Mikaela Shiffrin won both the Levi and Gurgl slalom races. The next World Cup slalom event is scheduled for later this week in the United States.
Competition has also begun for bobsled and skeleton athletes at the Olympic track in Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy. Jēkabs Kalenda and brakeman Arnis Bebrišs secured 13th place, while Renārs Grantiņš and Edgars Ungurs finished 23rd. In four-man bobsled, the two Latvian teams placed 17th and 20th, respectively. In skeleton, Dārta Neimane finished 22nd and Marta Andžāne was 27th. On the men’s side, Emīls Indriksons, making his World Cup debut, finished 23rd, and Dāvis Valdovskis placed 31st. Neimane and Indriksons combined for an eighth-place finish in the mixed team event. The second World Cup stage for these disciplines will be held this week in Igls, Austria.
