Following a detailed review process prompted by his past dual citizenship, Latvian biathlete edgars Mise has been approved to compete in the upcoming Winter Olympics in Milan and cortina d’Ampezzo. the Latvian Olympic Committee (LOK) thoroughly vetted Mise’s background amid heightened scrutiny regarding athletes with ties to Russia, ultimately finding no undue risk to his participation. this decision, detailed below, underscores the complex considerations facing international sports organizations as they navigate geopolitical concerns and athlete eligibility.

Latvia’s Olympic Committee has confirmed biathlete Edgars Mise will compete at the upcoming Winter Olympics in Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo, following a thorough review of his background. The process was necessary due to Mise holding dual Latvian and Russian citizenship in the past.

According to the Latvian Olympic Committee (LOK), a specially formed working group delegated by the LOK Executive Committee carefully evaluated all available information regarding Mise. The evaluation process included interviews with the athlete himself, information gathered from the relevant sports federation, and analysis of publicly available data and the athlete’s social media activity. The working group assessed the athlete’s potential ties to the aggressor state, citizenship aspects, social media posts, publicity risks, funding, and political stance. Based on this detailed assessment, the working group recommended to the LOK Executive Committee to approve the athlete’s inclusion in the Latvian Olympic delegation, finding no reasonable risks to his participation in the Games.

The review confirmed that Mise is of Russian ethnicity and his parents still reside in Russia. However, he renounced his dual citizenship several years ago and is now solely a citizen of the Republic of Latvia. Last year, he received a humanitarian visa to visit family, granted in exceptional circumstances. Following this visit, the Latvian Biathlon Federation discussed his actions with the athlete and urged him to be particularly mindful of his behavior and public communication, given his status as a Latvian athlete.

Since that time and the subsequent warning, Mise has been diligent in monitoring his actions and public statements to avoid creating grounds for false or misleading narratives. He has refrained from traveling to Russia and declined interviews with Russian media during international competitions.

The International Biathlon Union (IBU) awarded Mise a prize for his achievements and for promoting the sport under circumstances where the participation of athletes from aggressor states is prohibited, recognizing both his professionalism and responsible conduct as a Latvian athlete, LOK officials noted.

“We approached this issue carefully and evaluated various aspects, allowing us to make a reasoned and confident decision. Throughout the interviews, the athlete communicated with us in Latvian, and we observed no actions or statements that would indicate a positive attitude towards the aggressor state. We were assured that his family fully supports his participation in the Games as part of the Latvian delegation,” LOK cited LOK Vice President Jānis Liepiņš, a representative of the authorized working group, as saying.

The LOK has also approved short track speed skater Reinis Bērziņš and figure skater Fedirs Kuļišs for participation, following additional medical examinations.

Latvia will be represented in nine sports, with Latvian athletes competing in 29 disciplines, four of which are dependent on results achieved during the Olympic Games.

Latvian athletes will compete in biathlon, both men’s and women’s events, bobsleigh (two-man and four-man), men’s figure skating, cross-country skiing (men’s and women’s), men’s ice hockey, alpine skiing (men’s and women’s in various disciplines), luge (men’s and women’s singles and doubles, as well as mixed relay), men’s skeleton, and short track (men’s in three disciplines).

LOK stated that the final delegation composition may still change after the LOK Executive Committee’s final decisions this weekend.

LOK President Raimonds Lazdiņš highlighted that participation in the Milan and Cortina Olympic Games with the largest Latvian delegation to date is a testament to the development of the Latvian sports system.

“This delegation size is the result of long-term planning, active daily work, and close cooperation. It is not the result of one decision or one year’s achievement – it is the result of constant dialogue, dialogue between the sports sector and state institutions,” Lazdiņš said.

In addition to the 65 athletes, the delegation includes coaches, support staff, doctors and physiotherapists, media and content teams, delegation management, and officials, totaling 137 people.

The Milan and Cortina Olympic Games will take place from February 6 to February 22.
