Lions Offensive Coordinator Admits He Needs to Better Utilize Jameson Williams

Detroit Lions offensive coordinator John Morton stated today that he takes responsibility for not maximizing the impact of wide receiver Jameson Williams this season.

Morton, speaking on Thursday, reviewed the offense during the team’s bye week and concluded he needs to find more ways to involve Williams. Through seven games, Williams has 17 receptions for 289 yards and two touchdowns, with a significant portion of that production coming in just two games. “I looked at everything, as far as that. I’m going to do a better job with that,” Morton said. “But there has been opportunities where it just didn’t happen. It’s not like we aren’t going to try to target him. So that was the biggest thing. So I looked at everything, and I failed him. That’s what I told him. I have to do a better job with that. But it’s a two-way street. We definitely looked at that.”

Despite the limited production from Williams, the Lions offense currently ranks third in the NFL in points scored, demonstrating overall success under Morton’s play-calling. However, unlocking Williams’ potential could elevate the Lions’ offense to an even more dangerous level. The Lions’ passing game, as analyzed by Pro-Football-Reference, will be a key factor in their playoff hopes.

Morton acknowledged the situation requires a collaborative effort, stating it’s a “two-way street,” but emphasized his commitment to improving Williams’ involvement in the offense. This comes as the Lions prepare to face the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday, offering an immediate opportunity to implement changes. The team expects to see an increased effort to get Williams involved in the upcoming game against the Vikings, according to team officials.
