Grand Canyon Volleyball Heads to San Diego State, New Mexico for Mountain West Matches
The Grand Canyon University (GCU) volleyball team will continue its Mountain West Conference schedule with matches at San Diego State today and New Mexico on Saturday, building on recent momentum as they compete for a top conference ranking.
GCU (11-6) faces San Diego State (11-6) at 6:00 p.m. on the Mountain West Network, marking their first away match against the Aztecs. They then travel to New Mexico (8-9) for an 11:00 a.m. match on Saturday, also available on the Mountain West Network. The Lopes previously defeated New Mexico 3-0 at home last Saturday and hold a 3-1 overall record against the Lobos, while their only prior meeting with SDSU was a 2019 sweep in Phoenix.
Freshman setter/opposite Bella Nunez is a key player to watch, currently ranking fourth nationally in triple-doubles with four, and recently earning Mountain West Offensive and Freshman of the Week honors. Nunez averaged 3.14 kills, 5.00 assists, 3.29 digs, and 3.86 points per set last week, alongside two triple-doubles. Teammate Goodere ranks third in the conference with a .347 hitting percentage. GCU’s strong blocking game also contributes to their success, currently 16th in the nation with 2.78 blocks per set – a statistic that can significantly impact match outcomes. You can find more information about collegiate volleyball statistics at the NCAA website.
San Diego State is currently 6-0 in Mountain West play, led by senior opposite hitter Taylor Underwood, who has recorded double-digit kills in 13 consecutive matches. New Mexico, in contrast, is 0-6 in conference play, struggling in their previous match against GCU where they hit just .066 as a team. The Lopes will then travel to San José State on October 23 and Fresno State on October 25 to continue their conference schedule.
