Los Angeles Trash Collection Fees to Increase by Over 50%

Los Angeles residents will see a significant increase in their monthly trash collection bills, rising from $36.32 to $55.95, as the City Council approved a measure to address a substantial budget shortfall.

The rate hike, approved yesterday, is intended to eliminate a $500,000 daily subsidy of the city’s trash program and account for rising labor and equipment costs, as well as increased compliance demands with state recycling and organics laws. The increase, which hasn’t been substantially adjusted since 2008, aims to ensure trash collection is self-sufficient and no longer drains the city’s general fund. This change comes as Los Angeles, like many cities, faces increasing pressure to balance essential services with affordability for residents.

While the ordinance still requires Mayor Karen Bass’s signature, her office indicated she will sign it promptly. Once signed, the new rates will take effect after a 30-day period, meaning residents can expect to see the increase on bills starting in mid-November. The delay in implementation, due to a second reading required after a non-unanimous council vote, is currently costing the city approximately $500,000 per day – a total of $3.5 million to date. Customers enrolled in the EZ-SAVE or Lifeline programs will be eligible for a reduction in fees.

The decision has sparked concern among residents facing already-tight budgets, raising questions about the value for the increased cost. Officials maintain the increase is necessary to maintain service levels and adapt to evolving environmental regulations.
