Lufthansa Faces Compounding Labor Disruptions as Pilot Strike Gives Way to Cabin Crew Action

Deutsche Lufthansa is grappling with significant operational turmoil this week, with hundreds of flights canceled on Tuesday, April 14, 2026, as a pilot strike continues and cabin crew prepare for their own industrial action. The series of strikes underscores the deep-seated labor tensions currently challenging the German aviation giant’s operational stability.

The current two-day walkout, spanning Monday, April 13, and Tuesday, April 14, was initiated by the pilots’ union Vereinigung Cockpit (VC). The dispute centers on conflicts regarding employee remuneration and pension schemes. This movement has heavily impacted the main Lufthansa brand, as well as Lufthansa Cargo and the regional subsidiary Lufthansa CityLine.

Operational data from Monday, April 13, reveals the scale of the disruption: the “classic” Lufthansa brand managed to operate approximately one-third of its short-haul flights and half of its long-haul services. Eurowings, a Lufthansa subsidiary that also faced a one-day strike on Monday, maintained roughly 60% of its scheduled flights. By Monday afternoon, the VC union reported that more than 700 flights had been canceled. While the union stated it is “ready to discuss at any time,” it emphasized that any resolution depends on the company providing “really negotiable offers.”

The ripple effects of the strike have been felt acutely across European hubs, particularly in Switzerland. According to spokespeople from Zurich, Geneva, and Basel airports, several flights between Switzerland and Germany were scrapped. At Zurich Airport, 12 arrivals and 12 departures operated by Lufthansa and Eurowings were canceled. Geneva Airport reported six cancellations on Monday involving routes to Munich, Frankfurt, and Düsseldorf, with four additional cancellations scheduled for Tuesday. In Basel, six flights to Munich and one to Frankfurt were canceled Monday, with another six flights to Munich affected on Tuesday.

The volatility is expected to persist as a new wave of industrial action looms. The UFO union has called for Lufthansa’s cabin crew to strike on Wednesday, April 15, and Thursday, April 16, 2026. This action will specifically target flights operating through the company’s primary hubs in Frankfurt and Munich, with Lufthansa CityLine departures also expected to be affected.

The timing of these disruptions is particularly poignant, as Wednesday, April 15, marks the centennial of Lufthansa’s foundation. While the company has a ceremony planned to commemorate the milestone, union members from both UFO and VC have called on their members to manifest and protest on that day.

While Brussels Airlines, a member of the Lufthansa Group, is not directly involved in the strike action, the company has noted that some connections between Brussels Airport and various German airports have been impacted by the broader social movement.
