Leaving a Mac plugged in constantly isn’t ideal, as continuously charging a battery to 100% can degrade its lifespan over time. This feature addresses a growing concern among users seeking to maximize the longevity of their devices.

For years, both Android and iOS have allowed smartphones to limit battery charging to 80%. Both operating systems can automatically activate this limit during overnight charging, completing the charge just before a user typically wakes up.

This functionality proves particularly useful on laptops like the MacBook, where users have previously relied on third-party applications like AlDente. Apple will now integrate this charging limit natively into macOS with its next update.

Charging Limit Planned for macOS 26.4

According to Apple Insider, the first developer beta for macOS 26.4 now allows users to limit charging on their Mac. The feature mirrors the iOS implementation, offering adjustable limits between 80% and 100% in 5% increments.

Similar to iOS, macOS can also be configured to base charging on a user’s “charging routine,” fully charging the battery only when needed. For example, a user who leaves their Mac plugged in overnight before using it on the go during the day. These features will also be integrated into the macOS Shortcuts app for even faster access.

Developers should avoid installing this developer beta at this time, as it may prove unstable. Several versions will follow in the coming months before a more recommended public beta is released.
