Chinese E-Commerce Giant JD.com Expands into the Netherlands with New Delivery Service
JD.com, one of China’s largest retailers, is expanding its presence in Europe with the launch of its Joybuy platform and a new delivery service, Joyexpress, in the Netherlands. The move signals the company’s ambition to tap into the European market and compete with established players in the e-commerce space.
Joybuy, which began testing a website in the UK last April, is now available to consumers in the Netherlands, offering a wide range of products including groceries, electronics and clothing. The company is emphasizing competitive pricing as a key differentiator. This expansion comes as JD.com continues to grow its international footprint, with 2024 revenue exceeding US$158.8 billion and a ranking of 47 on the Fortune Global 500.
To support its operations in the Netherlands, JD.com has established Joyexpress, a dedicated delivery service. This investment in logistics infrastructure underscores the company’s commitment to providing efficient and reliable service to Dutch consumers. The launch of Joyexpress follows a partnership with British companies, announced on January 30, 2026, aimed at facilitating access to the Chinese market for UK brands.
The company’s entry into the Dutch market is also being viewed as a challenge to existing online retailers, including Picnic and Albert Heijn. JD.com is positioning itself as a strong competitor in the grocery and general merchandise sectors, leveraging its scale and technological capabilities. The expansion reflects a broader trend of Chinese e-commerce companies seeking opportunities for growth outside of their domestic market.
JD.com’s initial foray into the UK market, through Joybuy, began with a pilot program available in select London postcodes, with plans for wider expansion. The company’s strategy involves offering a diverse product selection and a focus on customer experience. This latest move into the Netherlands further solidifies JD.com’s international expansion strategy.
