Manchester United Increasing Playing Time for Young Defender Diego Leon

Manchester United is actively increasing playing opportunities for 18-year-old defender Diego Leon in academy fixtures as he continues to adapt to English football.

Leon arrived at Old Trafford in the summer transfer window following a £3.3million deal, potentially rising to £7m with add-ons, from Paraguayan side Cerro Porteno. He initially impressed coaches during pre-season and has been included in several matchday squads for the senior team by manager Ruben Amorim, appearing against Grimsby Town, Manchester City, Brentford and Sunderland, though he is yet to make his debut. The move allows the promising talent to develop within a structured environment while gaining valuable experience.

Academy manager Travis Binnion noted Leon’s potential, stating, “It is evident for all to see he has some real qualities and some strong foundations to his game that he has to build on.” Binnion also highlighted the importance of Leon gaining full match fitness, adding, “We will be looking to tick off a full 90 minutes pretty soon and that will be really good for him.” Leon recently made his international debut for Paraguay during the October international break, demonstrating his rising profile. United staff previously felt Leon would benefit from consistent minutes in youth matches after initially training exclusively with the first team, and he made his first academy appearance shortly after. Developing young talent is a key component of the club’s long-term strategy, as detailed in their foundation’s work.

Officials stated they will continue to monitor Leon’s progress in the academy with the aim of integrating him into the first team when he is fully prepared.
