Martin Short’s daughter, Katherine Hartley Short, died Monday, February 23, 2026, at her home in Hollywood Hills, California. Authorities have confirmed her death was a suicide.
The Los Angeles Fire Department responded to a call reporting a shooting at a residence in Hollywood Hills around 6 p.m. Local time. First responders found a woman deceased at the scene.
“At 6:41 p.m., we responded to a reported shooting at that address,” the Los Angeles Fire Department stated, confirming they received a 911 call. “Death was reported of a female.”
The family confirmed the tragic news on Tuesday, February 24, 2026, with a statement released through a representative.
“It is with profound grief that we confirm the passing of Katherine Hartley Short,” the statement read. “The Short family is devastated by this loss and asks for privacy at this time. Katherine was beloved by all and will be remembered for the light and joy she brought into the world.”
Katherine was the adopted daughter of the actor, 75, and his late wife, Nancy Dolman, who passed away from cancer in 2010. The couple, married for 30 years, also adopted sons Oliver Patrick, 39, and Henry Hayter, 36.
Katherine Hartley Short graduated from New York University in 2006 with a bachelor’s degree in psychology and gender sexuality studies, according to People. She later attended the University of Southern California in 2010 and worked as a social worker in the mental health field and as an entrepreneur.
Though she largely stayed out of the spotlight, Katherine was often seen with her father at public events. A recent public appearance was at her birthday celebration in 2023, and two years prior, she joined him at an event at the Kimpton La Peer Hotel in West Hollywood.
