Mosquito Complaints Surge in Maricopa County Following Recent Rainfall
Maricopa County, Arizona is experiencing a significant increase in mosquito activity and related complaints from residents following recent rainfall.
The Maricopa County Environmental Services Vector Control Division reported receiving nearly a thousand complaints in the last week, bringing the year-to-date total to approximately 3,000 – a dramatic rise compared to the roughly 1,000 complaints received during all of 2024. Division manager John Townsend stated the surge began approximately 10 days ago. This increase in mosquito populations can heighten the risk of West Nile virus and other mosquito-borne illnesses.
Residents are reporting unusually aggressive mosquito behavior. “They’ve been very small, and it’s been a lot at once. They bit me up. This is the most I’ve ever been bit by mosquitoes in my life,” said one Phoenix resident, Tayja. Understanding the differences between daytime and nighttime mosquito habits is crucial for effective protection; more information can be found on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website.
Vector Control officials are actively monitoring the situation and encourage residents to take preventative measures, such as eliminating standing water around their properties. Officials say they will continue to monitor mosquito populations and respond to community concerns as the rainfall continues.
