Stronger Together: Mother and Son Enlist in Latvian State Border Guard
In a rare display of familial commitment to national security, a mother and son have entered the Latvian State Border Guard together, undergoing their professional training side-by-side.

Inga and her son, ArtÅ«rs, are currently trainees within the same group at the agency’s training center. Their joint decision to enlist underscores a shared sense of duty and a desire to contribute to the country’s defense during a period of heightened strategic importance for the Baltic region.
“I wanted to change my life and do something meaningful for my country,” Inga said, describing her motivation for joining the service. Inga, State Border Guard Trainee
The presence of a family member in the same training cohort has provided a unique emotional support system for both. Artūrs noted that having his mother by his side has made the rigorous transition into military-style service more manageable, as they are able to encourage one another through the challenges of the program.
“I am very proud of my mother. We support each other every day, and that makes us stronger,” ArtÅ«rs said. ArtÅ«rs, State Border Guard Trainee
This unconventional pairing comes as the State Border Guard continues to actively recruit new personnel to bolster its capabilities. The agency is seeking dedicated individuals to maintain the integrity of the national border, a role that has grow increasingly critical given current geopolitical tensions.
The decision by Inga and Artūrs highlights the personal nature of national service and the role that family bonds can play in motivating citizens to step into high-stakes security roles. Their journey from civilians to border guards reflects a broader effort by Latvia to ensure its borders are manned by a committed and resilient force.
