MVRDV Unveils Plans for Spherical Sports Arena in Tirana, Albania
Dutch architecture studio MVRDV today announced plans for The Grand Ballroom, a 6,000-seat sports arena in Tirana, Albania, designed to resemble a sports ball and encompassing retail space, apartments, and a hotel.
The 20-story spherical structure will replace the existing Asllan Rusi Sports Palace and is intended to integrate seamlessly with the surrounding neighborhood, avoiding neglected rear facades. “The spherical shape is a reference to the round ball used by so many sports,” explained MVRDV partner Winy Maas. “Yet it also recalls enlightenment temples, from Étienne-Louis Boullée’s Cenotaph for Newton to Buckminster Fuller’s tribute to technological optimism, the geodesic dome.”
Renderings reveal a gridded exterior with vertical and horizontal elements framing glazed openings, alongside larger three-story openings with spacious terraces. The 90,200-square-meter building will feature public plazas, retail spaces, and a glass oculus crowning the arena, which will also serve as a centerpiece for a residents’ garden. Albania has seen a surge in ambitious architectural projects recently, reflecting a national focus on urban development and modernization. The development is part of a broader trend of statement architecture in Tirana, with other projects including a gridded skyscraper by Eduardo Souto de Moura and OODA and undulating towers by JA Joubert Architecture. The country’s Prime Minister has publicly stated his belief in architecture’s power to positively impact Albania. Similar large-scale spherical structures, like The Sphere in Las Vegas, are redefining entertainment venues globally.
Construction is slated to begin in the coming months, with officials anticipating the arena will become a central hub for sport and community life in Tirana.
