A Namibian politician named Adolf Hitler Uunona is seeking re-election in upcoming local polls, a striking reminder of the complex legacy of German colonialism in the African nation. The unusual name has drawn international attention, but Uunona is a well-established figure in Namibian politics, and his candidacy is not expected to significantly alter the country’s political landscape.

Uunona represents the Ompundja constituency and is a member of the South West Africa People’s Organization (SWAPO), the ruling party since Namibia gained independence on March 21, 1990. He confirmed to German newspaper Bild on November 26 that he will be running for a fifth term in the local elections.

The politician has already secured four previous victories and has served as the Ompundja representative since 2004, winning approximately 85 percent of the vote in the last election.

‘I only learned the truth as I grew up’

German-origin names, including Adolf, are relatively common in Namibia, a country that was once a German colony.

In a 2020 interview, Uunona explained that his father named him, and he initially didn’t understand the significance of the name. He stated, “I didn’t know what Adolf Hitler meant.”

Uunona added that he only uses the name on official documents and ballots, noting that it felt normal during his childhood but that he came to understand its true meaning as he matured.

Namibia and the German Genocide

SWAPO, the party to which Uunona belongs, is a former liberation movement that led the fight against South Africa’s apartheid regime. The party has won every national election held since Namibia’s independence.

Namibia’s history is deeply marked by its colonial past, and the country is known for the Herero and Nama genocide committed by German colonial forces between 1904 and 1908. During this period, the Herero people lost at least 70 percent of their population, and the Nama people lost at least 50 percent.

In 2018, Germany returned the remains of 25 people killed in the genocide to Namibia.

In 2021, the German government formally recognized the events as genocide but stopped short of offering direct financial reparations. Instead, Berlin committed to providing approximately $1.3 billion in development aid to Namibia over 30 years.
