Nashville Mayor Freddie O’Connell Announces City-Wide Curfew Following Overnight Protests

Nashville Mayor Freddie O’Connell announced a city-wide curfew beginning at 10:00 PM today, November 4, 2025, following a night of protests that resulted in property damage and multiple arrests.

The curfew will remain in effect until 6:00 AM tomorrow, and applies to all individuals except those traveling to or from work, seeking emergency medical care, or responding to emergency situations. Yesterday’s demonstrations began peacefully near the Metro Courthouse but escalated after 8:00 PM, spreading to several blocks of Broadway and 2nd Avenue. Police reported that protestors damaged storefronts and engaged in confrontations with officers. At least 25 individuals were taken into custody, facing charges ranging from vandalism to inciting a riot.

“The safety and well-being of our residents is our top priority,” Mayor O’Connell stated in a press conference this morning. “While we respect the right to peaceful protest, the violence and destruction we witnessed last night cannot be tolerated. This curfew is a necessary step to restore order and prevent further harm.” The protests stem from ongoing debate surrounding recent zoning changes and affordable housing initiatives, issues that have sparked considerable public concern. The Nashville Police Department will be increasing patrols throughout the city to enforce the curfew. Violators face potential fines and arrest. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) has stated it is monitoring the situation and will be providing legal support to those arrested during the protests, emphasizing the importance of protecting First Amendment rights. More details on the ACLU’s work can be found on their website.

Officials stated they will continue to assess the situation and will provide updates regarding the curfew as needed.
