Cruzeiro is finalizing a deal for highly-touted Colombian forward Néiser Villarreal, with the 20-year-old expected to join the Brazilian club next month on a five-year contract. The move comes after Villarreal impressed at the recent Under-20 World Cup, where he finished among the tournament’s leading scorers- bolstering Cruzeiro’s scouting department’s proactive efforts to secure his talent. Despite initial complications with a contract dispute with his former club, millonarios, the acquisition demonstrates Cruzeiro’s ambition and willingness to invest in promising young players.
Brazilian side Cruzeiro is set to welcome Néiser Villarreal next month, poised to finalize a five-year contract with the club. The deal to secure the young forward was initially agreed upon in September, but was solidified following a standout performance at the recent Under-20 World Cup.
Villarreal generated significant buzz at the Under-20 World Cup, finishing as one of the tournament’s top scorers with five goals, and Cruzeiro officials are eager to integrate him into the squad. He is expected to join Jardim’s team in December. The move comes despite an administrative process initiated by Millonarios after the player failed to report for duty with a current contract.
“I can assure you that if we hadn’t signed him before the Under-20 World Cup, we almost certainly wouldn’t have been able to,” Pinto said in an interview. “It’s that element of risk, which we often can’t be afraid to take.”
A Challenging Negotiation and Potential for Profit
Cruzeiro’s chief scout added that acquiring Villarreal wasn’t straightforward, and negotiations stalled at one point when the asking price exceeded the club’s budget.
“We knew, and you all know now, that securing his signature wasn’t easy. It was a process that involved a lot of discussion; at one point, talks broke down because the asking price was beyond Cruzeiro’s reach. Ultimately, we were able to finalize the deal, and we are extremely satisfied,” the scout explained.
“Right now, even without playing a game for Cruzeiro, we could potentially sell Néiser for a profit. Many clubs at the Under-20 World Cup hadn’t fully recognized his potential, or were hesitant to take a risk. Now, they are showing interest based on his performance in the tournament,” Joaquim added.
