Kushner Meets with Netanyahu as Gaza Ceasefire Enters Critical Phase
Deir al-Balah, Gaza Strip – U.S. envoy Jared Kushner met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu today to discuss the next steps in the ongoing Gaza ceasefire, as Israel returned the remains of 15 Palestinians and received the remains of a soldier killed in 2014.
The exchange of remains is central to the first phase of the ceasefire agreement, which is nearing its end. For each Israeli hostage returned, Israel is releasing the remains of 15 Palestinians; to date, 315 sets of remains have been received, though only 91 have been identified due to a shortage of DNA testing kits in Gaza. One mother, Shaima Abu Ouda, is desperately searching for her missing 15-year-old son, Rayyan, among the returned remains, having lost her husband and eldest son during the conflict. The ongoing conflict has created a humanitarian crisis, with over 69,000 Palestinians reported killed in Gaza since October 2023, according to the Gaza Health Ministry.
Yesterday, Israel confirmed the return of the remains of Hadar Goldin, a soldier killed in the Gaza Strip in 2014, bringing closure to a long and painful chapter for his family. A funeral is scheduled for Tuesday. Negotiations are also reportedly underway, led in part by Kushner, to secure safe passage for 150-200 Hamas militants in exchange for surrendering their weapons. The United Nations reports that over 1 million Palestinians in Gaza have received food aid since the ceasefire began, but significant obstacles remain in delivering sufficient humanitarian assistance. Meanwhile, the Israeli military released a review acknowledging failures in intelligence and operational response leading up to the October 7, 2023, attack that initiated the current war. The report found that critical intelligence was not properly analyzed, and criticized the performance of ground, naval, and air forces. This internal assessment comes as critics call for a broader, independent inquiry into governmental decision-making. The situation in the West Bank is also escalating, with demolitions planned in the village of Umm al-Khair, documented in the Oscar-winning film “No Other Land”, raising concerns about the future of Palestinian communities in the occupied territories.
Officials say the next phase of the ceasefire hinges on establishing a governing body for Gaza and deploying an international stabilization force, but the path forward remains unclear.
